Ordering repeat prescriptions

Repeat Prescriptions

The preferred method of repeat prescription request is the NHS APP or Patient Access, an online service. For details of how to register, see the section below. 

You can also request your repeat prescription requests by the following methods:

  • call your nominated chemist 
  • request using form on your previous prescription
  • post the request to the practice
  • come to the practice front desk and a repeat form can be printed for you. 
  • patients can also sign upto any online pharmacy that will order and post medication  

Please allow two full working days for prescriptions to be processed and remember to take weekends and bank holidays into account.

For safety reasons you are unable to order your prescriptions over the phone. 

Collecting your prescription

You can usually collect your prescription from the pharmacy 3 to 5 working days after you have ordered it.

You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from. We call this nominating a pharmacy.

You can change your nominated pharmacy at any time:

  • on the app or website where you order repeat prescriptions
  • at your GP practice
  • at any pharmacy that accepts repeat prescriptions

The NHS App

The NHS App lets you book GP appointments, order repeat prescriptions and access a range of other healthcare services. For this app, you do not need to come into the practice with ID.

The NHS App is free to download from Apple Store or Google Play.

Register for Patient Access

Patient Access allows you to request repeat prescriptions online.

To register, collect a form from the surgery reception. We require 2 forms of ID, one of which should be photo ID.

Once registered you will be able to:

  • Request and track a repeat prescription
  • Send a message with your request
  • Read information about your medication
  • View your medication history

The practice does not store your password or security questions for Patient Access. If you need to reset these, please click ‘Help’ on the Patient Access homepage.

Emergency Prescriptions

Only medication listed on our list of emergency prescription drugs will be issued on the same day. Please be aware only four days worth of emergency medication will be supplied – it is strongly advised to order your repeat alongside this request.

Medication and Dehydration

The advice in this document does not apply to single episodes of sickness or diarrhoea. If you develop a dehydrating illness, you should temporarily stop taking any medicine listed below and any other medicine identified by your health professional. It is very important that you restart your medicine once you have recovered from the illness. This would normally be after 24 to 48 hours of eating and drinking normally.

Help with Prescription Fees

If you have a number of regular prescriptions, you may be able to reduce the cost through a Prescription Pre-Payment Certificate.

NHS Charges

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

  • Prescription (per item): £9.65
  • 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £111.60
  • 3-month PPC: £31.25

If you pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.

Electronic Prescribing Service

This practice uses the electronic prescription service.

This means that, for most patients, we can send your prescription to your chosen chemist directly saving you having to come to the surgery.

To use this service, ask at reception for a registration form.

Medication Reviews

Patients on repeat medication will be asked to see a doctor, nurse or clinical pharamcist at least once a year to review these regular medications.

When it is time for a review, you will receive a message from the practice

Please ensure that you book an appropriate appointment to avoid unnecessary delays to further prescriptions.

Needles (Sharps) Disposal

Where a person treats themselves in their home, it is their responsibility to dispose of any clinical waste in a responsible way. This should be by using a sharps bin and taking this to a disposal point. Sharps bins larger than 1 litre will not normally be accepted at participating disposal points.

Sharps bins are available on prescription from your doctor. Sharps bins are plastic containers designed for the safe disposal of hazardous waste. They can take needles, empty syringes, empty insulin cartridges and lancets. Some patients use ‘B-D safe clip’ devices to remove the needle from the syringe. This does not need to be done if the needle and syringe are put straight into the sharps bin.

Where patients are prescribed sharps boxes by their GP, they can take the full boxes back to Spa Medical Practice for disposal as we are registered to accept waste. Other sharps disposal points are listed below.
